Program 3 / HYUCKPIL

Hyuckpil

K-Letter Pops

Hyuckpil is a Korean folk art of painting letters with a brush made of leather in one flowing, colorful line. Its playful rainbow strokes bring Hangeul to life.

Seoul: Wearing Hanbok and Drawing Hangeul Folk Lettering

HOEK's Hyuckpil program is a hands-on experience where you create your own artwork — your name, a word, or a phrase — in hyuckpil, the traditional Korean lettering art that paints a rainbow into every single stroke of a leather brush. It is a time and a space to slow down, immerse yourself in Korean traditional culture, and learn something genuinely rare.

The core journey

  1. 01

    Hanbok & Tea Time

Your session begins with dressing in hanbok, followed by traditional Korean tea and hangwa confectionery. The master then introduces the history and aesthetics of hyuckpil, and the Korean culture expressed within it.

  2. 02

    Lecture on Hyuckpil

A brief lecture on the folk origins and symbolism behind Korea's vibrant leather-brush calligraphy.

  3. 03

    Master Live Performance

Before you pick up the brush, you watch the hyuckpil master perform. The leather brush moves across hanji paper, and multiple colors bleed into each other within a single stroke — right before your eyes. A rainbow script comes alive in a way found in no other calligraphy tradition in the world. You will want to try it yourself.

  4. 04

    Practice

You begin with the fundamentals. How to load the leather brush with pigment, how to control the color blend, how to manage the weight of each stroke. The master teaches you directly — how to hold the brush, how to move it — and helps you find your own rhythm. The pace is entirely yours.

  5. 05

    Create Your Artwork

The heart of the session. Write your name, a chosen word, or a phrase you have been carrying — in hyuckpil, on hanji paper, stroke by stroke under the master's guidance. A one-of-a-kind rainbow Korean lettering artwork, made entirely by your hands.

  6. 06

    Stamping the Seal

Your finished piece is completed with a custom 'Hoek' seal and your fingerprint, then mounted in a small wooden frame and wrapped in a traditional bojagi cloth. Hang it on your wall when you get home — a one-of-a-kind keepsake to remember your time in Korea.
